WHAT IS IT?
This keto diet for weight loss is very low in carbohydrates with high levels of protein and just enough healthy fats to add flavour to foods. Very low carb diets are scientifically proven to work effectively at burning fat and reversing many symptoms relating to the metabolic syndrome including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity and other chronic illnesses such as lipedema and lymphedema.
WHAT IS INSULIN RESISTANCE AND WHY ARE HORMONES SO IMPORTANT TO KETO WEIGHT LOSS?
The basis for keto weight loss lies in a hormonal explanation for why we get fat. Insulin is the most important and most commonly disucussed culprit. Among other things, insulin regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. It tells fat cells when to take in glucose and convert it to fat. The often-discussed ‘insulin resistance’ is a failure of the body to respond as it should when insulin is released. In this case, ever increasing amounts of insulin are released. A vicious cycle of fat accumulation and increased insulin levels ensues. A pervasive side effect is chronic inflammation. An important aspect of achieving keto weight loss is working out how insulin resistant you are.
REGULATE WHAT YOU EAT
Keto and other low carbohydrate/healthy fat ways of eating, seeks to limit the amount of insulin in the system by reducing the intake of glucose. This allows the body to convert its already stored glucose, in fat cells, to energy. In so doing, the fat cells are burnt off. Most obviously, this is done by regulating what you eat. It is also important to keep in check the levels of other hormones that affect insulin, such as cortisol and adrenaline. A naturally reduced appetite is the result of making this switch. This means that the body returns to a virtuous health/eating cycle.
Thus the ketogenic way of eating looks to keep our hormones regulated in a healthy way. It does this by focusing both directly and indirectly on insulin by considering other important hormones too,

WHO SHOULD THINK TWICE BEFORE DOING THE KETOGENIC DIET?
Breastfeeding – ultra strict keto is not advised for breastfeeding mothers. It can limit the production of breast milk and has also shown in limited studies to lead to ketoacidosis. I recommend keep your carbohydrates between 80g and 100g per day. To make it easier I can supply you with a breastfeeding meal plan.
